What happened to Demonoid ?

An update – here
Three days have passed since my favorite torrent tracker Demonoid went off-line. It has happened before – and the cause was some anti piracy group forcing the site to move its server to Canada . But it is unclear what is the cause for the downtime now. I am following the new updates at Zero Paid but so far nothing is clear …
I have been using Demonoid for a long time , have a good ratio there and am very satisfied with the content I found on its pages. My only concern is that its admission is a bit too liberal – semi-private tracker is not always the best solution. May be when the site comes back it would become completely private – which I think is the way to go.
Update : According to the Slashdot and Teach Talk – the site has been shut down by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) – Torrent Freak supports this version . At the same time the net and the blog sphere become flooded with versions of what happened . On Demonoid’s irc channel, the only news that they are saying is that it is hardware related. However, no mods are currently on to find out what is really happening. Latest rumors from Wikipedia :
An unverified IRC chat was posted at The Circuit Box, which claims to be a discussion between a TorrentFreak reporter and a Demonoid staff member. This was released approximately 18 hours after the site went offline:
“Ok folks, here it is. Demonoid is down. It has been for around 2 day [sic] almost. The reason it is down is unknown, and is still unknown. It HASN’T I repeat HASN’T been RAIDed, shutdown, terminated, deleted, burned, mamed [sic], or thrown under a bridge.”
Аn update :
Demonoid is back online – it seems that it had troubles with the Canadian legislators – and the rumors are that from now on all Canadian traffic will be blocked at the tracker. Still for now I am getting :
The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems – We’ll be back soon

Good to know that demonoid is just down, hopefully temporary, because I thought my ISP had blocked it.

I too found Demonoid as my favorite site. I have used it for years and been a contributor in sharing and donations too. This will be a huge loss to the torrent community if they cant get back up. Hopefully its something mechanical and not legal issues.

I live in Canada and this was and still is my favorate site. If you look at the judements in the Supreme Court of Canada, the court stated and enfaticly stated that file sharing is NOT stealing. They likend it to placing items or documents on a table in front of your house and people comming looking at them and making copies or taking what they wanted. If you have no security or its not behind a locked door then legaly you can find it. Your computer is the same thing. If you leave your computer vunarable on the internet for anyone to look thru it then if someone copies files from you how it it any diffrent than the table senario. This is a lobby group pushing it weight around that has no ability to back it up. The Crown does not care if you share files as long as you are not stealing them by breaking into a secured computer.

This really sucks, I’m Canadian and now I can’t even access demonoid. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? Here is the message I got when I tried to go there:
“We received a letter from a lawyer represeting the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and We need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. If you reside in Canada, that is the reason you are being redirected to this message. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.”
I’ll say this is an inconvenience alright! This sucks.

I for one am happy this happened to them. Sure demonoid is great site, but it is full of stuck up nerds, and the registration is NEVER open. I mean why have a site like demonoid even exist if registration for users is impossible. Shut down demoniod, go EMULE. Simple.
Comment by demonid sucks — November 9, 2007 #
Well Demonoid – opens its registration from time to time – just have to be there at the right time. My opinion is that they should make the tracker entirely private .As for e-mule I love it and am using it a lot. Demonoid too

Demonoid is a great site,I’ve been a member for the last year or so and I can easily say its one of the best torrent sites ever, sadly they’re down,at least for now – this is what I get when I try to open the page :
“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”
I’m not sure if this means they’re down for good or if they’re simply relocating,I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

On the plus side, Demonoid does (did) have some good stuff for download.
On the minus side it’s run and modded by a bunch of wankers. They have a comments section for each torrent, but as soon as you make any kind of risque comment (unless it’s ‘thanks buddy. great upload!’) then you get a threat from a mod cunt who tells you to take your comment to the forums,( which you have to register separately for ‘cos it’s such a lame setup)
Demonoid down? No bigg loss.
